A self proclaimed artist pulled off a stunt on the streets of Berlin.
Simon Weckert used almost 100 smartphones to simulate a traffic jam by pulling them through the streets. When Google’s system detects that amount of phones and – since he was walking with them – the slow pace at which they were moving, it automatically assumes there is traffic and updates its maps accordingly, sending motorists on alternate routes to avoid the “congestion”.
In the video posted to his blog, you can see how the color of the streets on Google Maps slowly turns from green to maroon as he strolls down them.
While there is speculation among experts that the entire episode was faked, even if not, it’s not everyday that people walk the streets with 100 phones on them. So you can continue relying on your navigation systems, no sweat.
